Supporting Neurodivergent Parents and Children

We’ve developed a gentle, inclusive programme designed to support neurodivergent parents of neurodivergent children.

Because neurodivergence is highly heritable (estimated to be around 88%), it’s common for neurodivergent adults to have neurodivergent children. Many parents discover their own neurodivergence later in life, often after recognising similar traits in their child.

How Neurodivergent Traits Can Affect Parenting

  • Sensory sensitivities
  • Need for solitude or quiet time
  • Sleep difficulties or increased need for rest
  • Emotional regulation challenges
  • Coping with uncertainty or change
  • Anxiety
  • High self-criticism or low self-compassion
  • Past trauma
  • Executive functioning difficulties
  • Struggles with mundane or repetitive tasks
  • Limited support networks

About the Programme

This new initiative offers a three session programme for small groups of up to eight parents and carers. Each session provides space to explore:

  • Wellbeing and self-care
  • Practical tools for everyday life
  • Understanding, validation and celebration of neurodivergent traits and strengths
  • Building community and connection

To build on this programme further and maintain ongoing support, a monthly creative and wellbeing drop-in group will also be available, offering a welcoming space for continued connection and growth.

Expected Impact

  • Improved self-esteem for both parents and children
  • Better understanding and acceptance of individual challenges
  • A stronger sense of community and belonging
  • Celebration of neurodivergent strengths such as creativity, fairness, and empathy
  • Enhanced parent child connection and attachment
  • Reduced youth criminality and risky behaviours
  • Fewer mental health crises and lower rates of addiction
  • Improved overall wellbeing and life expectancy
  • Greater engagement in learning for children
